“Leaders are made, they are not born.
They are made by hard effort, which is the
price which all of us must pay to achieve
any goal that is worthwhile.”
—Vince Lombardi

Step Into Being the Best and Having the Best through Self-Leadership

No longer is life-long learning a luxury. On-going learning is a necessity to navigate effectively in this world of changing markets and personnel needs. There was a time when the majority of the population trained for a specific profession and continued with that career until they retired. Today that is rarely the case. The new professional is estimated to have 6-7 career changes while engaged in the workforce.

Companies today are looking to cross train personnel in multiple tasks, so as one job becomes obsolete or a job shift is required, the transition is less costly and more effective. A company that recognized the importance in shifting company job classifications from singular career focus to multiple tasks was Toyota. When U.S. automakers found it necessary to make huge personnel cutbacks, Toyota was able to avoid massive layoffs by cross training their employees.

Technology has changed office dynamics significantly causing new organizational structure. The corporate ladder has fewer rungs to climb with the fading of the command and control hierarchical method of leadership. Now it is imperative for you to tap deeper into your potential. This will give you the power and strategies to be on top of your ladder rather than join the ranks of those at the bottom still looking for a future with outdated skills and knowledge.

One can work from various locations with greater speed, efficiency and flexibility using computers, smartphones, webinars, Internet/Intranet, videos, teleseminars, etc. Another effect of automation is jobs have vanished where masters degrees were once required. University business schools are rethinking the effectiveness of their MBA programs.
In the past, graduates from leading university business schools were guaranteed they would move right into a high-paying position upon graduation. T
hat is no longer true. It is estimated in the eighteen-month period ending December 2009, 240,000 people were laid off on Wall Street.

Compensation has fallen as well. In my recommended book this month, “Rethinking the MBA” by Harvard University and Harvard Business School professors, the authors have presented their findings in researching MBA programs.

Social networking and blogs have spawned business and human resources to new levels of marketing. Professionals are making connections locally, nationally and worldwide easier and faster. They are finding new opportunities and resources to build their careers & businesses.

Looking to a company’s charismatic leader to follow is vanishing as professionals are looking for more latitude in being a leader among leaders by developing their leadership, creativity and unique talents.

To remain competitive as well as be on the leading edge, companies are rethinking how they do business. In this new economy the American worker no longer goes in to work to solely perform work. Learning along with working is essential in the new workplace environment. Companies are transforming from past business building models to a new model. They are transforming workplaces into learning organizations. They are collaborating with educational institutions to provide ongoing work-related training.

Following are six tips to be on the leading edge in your profession and being the best.

6 Tips to Have the Best – Be the Best in Success and Wealth

  1. Whether you are a solopreneur, entrepreneur or work for someone else, you are responsible for your success. In my 7-Tier Leadership Program “Soar with Trained Wings” my clients develop life-long skills to have the best in their life and be the best. Level 1 Passion, is being crystal clear about what you want (not what someone else says you should want) to Level 7 Mastery in achieving your goals. Levels 2-6 are designing your leadership milestones, success habits and practices. Self-awareness is your key to achieve what you want to achieve.

  2. Take time out to remove yourself from your regular routines and responsibilities. Start small by walking 30 minutes a day. Take deep breaths as you walk letting in fresh air and releasing the old. Be present to your surroundings and not with thoughts of things to do or guilt over what you haven’t done. Your mind needs to be uncluttered to allow your inner guide to help you. In other words, get out of your way to make room for the new.

  3. Develop your imagination to a broader range. If you keep getting the same results, then you must be doing the same thing: using old formulas in the attempt to get a new result. Take personal weekly breaks to do an activity outside of your routine that you may have wanted to do, but didn’t find the time. Draw, take up a hobby, go on a tour, read books on developing your creativity, get a coach to help expand your imagination, or take up a sport you have wanted to learn.

  4. Lead your life by taking action to cultivate your destiny. This is empowering, rewarding, and brings more peace and love into your life.

  5. If you are having trouble figuring out how to modernize your talents, examine your values. Your values are a valuable clue. They speak to what is important to you. The majority of people I work with have “freedom” as a high value. Start there by completing the following sentence: With more freedom I would ______________.” List at least twenty items you can imagine freedom would allow you. Maybe freedom to you would be being your own boss; freedom from debt; freedom to go back to school, etc. Think without fear or guilt. Have fun and stretch your imagination.

  6. Invest in yourself. Hire a coach (see my special, special offer below). The professional/executive pace is faster and life-long learning through developing self-awareness to self-leadership is the Right Track to be on. Call me for an exploratory interview.

"Coaching will become the model for leaders in the
future...I am certain that leadership can be learned,
and that terrific coaches...facilitate learning."
- Warren Bennis

As your coach I have the questions that hold the answers you are seeking. The coaching relationship is a strong bond between client and coach deliberating focusing on the client’s success.

Another component of the coach is to have the tools and skills to guide you based on your agenda and not someone else’s course of action. To excel is up to you. You do the work. I provide the tools, keys, strategies and support that accelerate your desired outcomes.

Coaching is one of the best tools to learn life-long skills to empower you in achieving the results you desire quicker and smarter. The power of the coaching relationship is based on the ability of the coach to hold the client’s bigger picture agenda, while coaching through the everyday happenings toward the larger vision. Here are a few of the lasting results my coaching clients receive:

  • 20% to 100% financial increase whether working for an employer or being self-employed.

  • Long-term excellence in performance through developing self-leadership habits and practices.

  • Confidence as a leader and team member to influence others in achieving outstanding results that didn’t seem possible.

  • Skills to actualize the truth that “Anything is Possible” even when the going gets tough.

  • Influential leadership grows through disciplines of self-leadership, which are learned throughout the coaching relationship.

  • Employee retention of top performers is maintained, which is a big savings to an employer.

  • New competencies are developed which are necessary to play a bigger game. Without new competencies one is playing the same game over and over again.

  • Fulfillment, success and security increase dramatically.

Recommended Book:

“Rethinking the MBA” by Harvard University/Business School Professors and Associate: Srikant M. Datar, David A. Garvin, & Patrick G. Cullen

The authors offer concrete ideas for business colleges to reinvent their programs; case studies on how MBA programs are transforming to align with today’s career trends; extensive interviews with deans and executives; the book is well researched and organized.

It is a wake-up call to business educators in the training of future leaders. Globalization and technology shape businesses very differently than in the past. The disappearance of lucrative careers with the best firms once guaranteed to MBA graduates have all but disappeared and no longer a guarantee of success.

This is a book for future change agents, business educators, and career builders.
