Standing Tall - A Winner's
Trait
Something that most of us don't take notice of is how we stand
or walk. The military requires soldiers to have the best
postures. Why do you suppose the military trains its soldiers
to march straight and tall? What possible difference can it
make?
How you stand and walk says volumes about you before you even
say a word. The majority of us walk around everyday without
paying any attention to what we are saying even though we are
not uttering a word. There is a lot that can be said about
body language from the clothes you wear to gestures. For this
newsletter I mainly want to stick with what our walk has to say
about our talk.
I took notice of this topic recently as I recalled something
about changing my posture to improve my level of confidence.
I was about to venture on a new project, which would take me out
of my comfort zone. My gremlins were having a field day with me
with all kinds of reasons why I couldn't do a good job with this
new opportunity. I tucked in my tummy, put my shoulders back,
held my head high, and took a walk. Soon thereafter, I felt so
much better. I approached the project with new zest and
possibility. Wow what a difference! Try it.
Questions have the answers:
1. When you stand and walk tall what do you notice?
2. What does your stature say about you? Ask others to critique your stance.
3. Is your talk and walk in alignment?
4. What happens to your mood when you slouch?
Tip:
Practice standing with tummy tucked in, shoulder blades reaching
to touch each other, chin up and looking straight ahead. Don't
worry if you have an overweight concern. This exercise is still
quite effective. It may even give you the momentum to start
exercising and eating more moderately if you so wish.
In less than 5 seconds people judge those seen for the first
time. First impressions make a difference. Take time to
people watch. What scenarios do you imagine about these
strangers?

Leadership
Pointers
The ability to capture your audience when you walk into a room
is sure to start you off on the right foot when making a speech
or a presentation to a prospective buyer. Non-verbal signals
have five times the impact of verbal signals. So you can count
on losing your audience when you walk in with head down dragging
your feet regardless how much you try to change it.
It is important that your verbal message is congruent with your
body language to be believable.
1. What can be improved in the way you stand and walk?
2. What does a winner's stance look like?
3. What is your judgment of someone who slouches?
4. What is the posture of the leaders you admire?
5. What benefits would 'standing tall' have on your health?
Tip:
In strengthening your stance, mimic the posture and walk of your
role models. Notice the difference in how you feel and your
confidence level. Listen to your body and feel the power as you
individualize your 'standing tall.'

Michelangelo's sculpted Pieta (1498-1499) and the gigantic nude
statue of David (1501-04) are perfection in marble.
'I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free',
he explained.

you are free to explore and express.

For
Singles Only
For those of you looking to lose weight, standing more erect
gives the impression you have lost 5-15 lbs, depending on your
current weight. Since pulling in my tummy and walking
straighter, my friends are asking me if I lost weight.
It's magic! It's so simple!
If 2007 is the year for finding the love of your life, then
increase your non-verbal communication to attract more
opportunities. Take a stand for what you want and take the
steps to making it so.
Tip:
This is the season for parties and family gatherings, which can
be fun or down right disheartening. Whichever the case may
'stand tall' and be the difference you want from others.
This is a small step in making a big impression in your
non-verbal communication.
1. What signals are you sending when entering a room of
strangers?
2. What is the stature of someone you would you most likely
speak to at a singles event?
3. What exercises are you practicing to 'stand tall'?
4. What are your inner critics saying when you slouch?
5. What emotions change when you shift from slouching to
walking tall?
