In this issue:
Simple Strategy - More Efficiency
It is amazing that the simplest strategy to increase efficiency
can be more productive and satisfying. I have invested in many a
day planner hoping to keep me organized. Yet I find pen and a
small notebook are the best tools in getting my day off to a good
start and ending the day satisfied.
Benefits of the formula are:
- It aids in synchronicity to attract opportunities
- It definitely is the way to becoming an effective leader
- It builds relationships and connections
- It is available at all times
- It doesn't cost anything
- It takes less than 5 minutes
- It saves time
- It increases wealth
- It creates freedom
- It is the fast track to achieving results
Most people allow circumstances to dictate their daily
responses, which is certainly understandable in life challenging
events. Are you a responder or proactive in your activities?
Ivy Ledbetter Lee advised Charles M. Schwab (not related to
Charles R. Schwab, founder of the Charles Schwab discount
brokerage firm) on this formula to success. Ivy Lee (1877-1934)
was one of the most influential pioneers in public relations.
Lee did not limit his role to writing press releases and public
statements; he was also an advisor to industrial millionaires,
such as John D. Rockefeller, Jr., President of Standard Oil, and
Charles Schwab, President of Bethlehem Steel.
The beginning of the working relationship between Lee and Schwab
began when Lee called on Charles Schwab in the role of efficiency
expert. Lee told Schwab that he could help him do a better job
of managing Bethlehem Steel. Schwab said it wasn't that he
didn't know what to do, but what was needed was a lot more doing.
He said, 'If you can show us a better way of getting it done,
I'll listen to you - and pay you anything within reason you ask.'
Lee assured Schwab that he could give him something that would
increase his efficiency by at least 50 percent. He handed the
executive a blank sheet of paper and said, 'Write down on this
paper the six most important things you have to do tomorrow.'
Schwab paused a moment and then did as requested. In about 3-4
minutes he was done.
Lee then said, 'Now number them in the order of their importance
to you and to the company.' After Schwab was done, which only
took another 2 minutes or so, Lee told him to put the paper in
his pocket. In the morning take the paper out and look at the
first item and start working on it. And if you can stay with it
until it's completed, then work on item number two the same way;
and so on, until you quit for the day.'
Lee told him not to worry if he only finished one or two items.
The others can wait. He assured him that without a system it
would take 10 times longer to get anything done, and more than
likely not even have them in the order of importance.
'Do this every working day,' Lee went on. 'After you've
convinced yourself of the value of this system have your men try
it. Try it as long as you like, and then send me your check for
whatever you think the idea is worth.' The interview was done in
less than half-an-hour.
A few weeks later Schwab sent him a letter stating that the
lesson was most profitable. Included with the letter was a check
for $25,000. Not bad for less than 30 minutes of consulting.
The little known company turned into one of the biggest steel
companies, Bethlehem Steel and it is rumored this rule was
largely responsible for the company's turnaround.
Tip: Pen and Paper Technique
In the evening write down six (6) important goals for the next
work day and then prioritize them. In the morning look at the
piece of paper with the goals and start working on the first item
until satisfied. Keep moving through the list until the end of
the workday. Don't worry if you don't complete everything on
the schedule. At least you will have completed the most
important projects before getting to the less important ones.
Do this for 4 weeks and let me know what happens.
This system takes less than five minutes to put into practice.
What is it worth to you to put this formula into practice?
It
was worth $25,000 to Charles Schwab and look what he achieved!

Leadership
Pointers - On Purpose with Pen & Paper
Yes, the above formula came about nearly a century ago, before
email, cell phones, Internet and other hi-tech equipment.
However, I would like to challenge you to try it out for four
weeks. There are many organizational systems available. Believe
me, I've tried more systems than I care to admit purchasing.
What if the simplest turns out to be the most effective? I
started using this system and have gotten surprising results. It
keeps me focused and in integrity with my purpose. My business
is improving, as well as my efficiency.
Tip: The list is to be in alignment with your highest goals for
personal and professional excellence. It may mean not making
someone else's emergency yours. Be at choice and in integrity.
Tip: Notice what sidetracks you from your primary goals in any
given day. Is it emails or interruptions that can wait? It may
even be resistance to moving forward due to uncertainty or lack
of confidence.
Tip: What daily practices can be altered or eliminated to keep
you on the Right Track? Be proactive rather than reactive.
